The day of Stevens’ release from maximum security prison
The Story
His spine is bent, and his breathing is labored. Muscular dystrophy slowly makes its way through his body, shutting down muscle after muscle. But his confinement to a maximum-security state prison on a low-level drug charge for 15 years to life was equally contorting.
Terrence Stevens aka the brainchild of IRONSYDZ personifies human suffering from the US’ trillion-dollar failed War on Drugs. He was sentenced to 15-years-to-life for a nonviolent drug offense and served 10 years in a maximum security prison before receiving executive clemency in 2001. In prison, he received substandard and inadequate medical care. He required aassistance with feeding, bathing, being lifted in and out of bed, and turned from side to side every two hours during the night to ease respiratory complications. Upon release from prison in 2001, Terrence joined other activists pushing for drug law reform and dedicated himself to helping others . Thanks to their collective effort and unwavering commitment we can all enjoy legal cannibis today.
In 2001, Terrence received a prestigious Echoing Green fellowship thanks to a matching contribution by Massachusetts Humanitarian Peter Greer. This ignited Stevens on a 22-year journey of healing and helping casualties of the injustice system. IRONSYDZ indeterminable spirit of giving and reforming the drug laws led to the founding of his non-profit, In Arms Reach, Inc. , dedicated to breaking the cycle of intergenerational inequality for low-income children and families of NYC, primarily children impacted by parental incarceration, and neighborhoods devastated by mass incarceration.
